A youthful first XI with Ogden Jr. at the helm turned up to face an experienced side away at Chesham with the Hares desperate to get back to winning ways after a gutting near miss against Henley and a rain off against Rowant.
Winning the toss and putting in the home side looked like a good decision when Matt Rance once again fell victim to Jordan, with Crick soon after taking the second and third wickets to leave Chesham in a difficult position. The return of Lee Tyrrell added another string to the bow of an already varied HCC seam attack, and his pace and aggression tore further holes in the Chesham batting line up and eventually returned figures of 5-48. When Chesham found themselves 6 down for just 87, Harefield had their tails up. However, Chesham’s number 8 decided to counter attack, hitting a quick fire 43 at over 200 strike rate, accompanied by Chesham opener Morgan’s resilient 50 took the home side to 151 all out, which seemed about above par on a sticky one with a slow outfield. The Hares knew that they would need a couple of people needed to get in, if they were to reach the target. Both Skipper Ogden and Hatton fell for 5 playing aggressive strokes, and while Matt Ogden, 38 (75), Tyrrell, 17 (24), and both McLeods T., 11 (34) and J., 18 (31), attempted to take the chase deep. When Fosberry and Croft both fell for 0 and 1 respectively, leaving just Crick to come, victory seemed unlikely. Despite some brief creative and positive stroke making from our number 11, the Hares disappointingly fell 33 short. While positives can be taken from the bowling and fielding performance, there is definitely room for improvement in all three disciplines going into the last two fixtures of the shortened season. Two victories from the remaining two games would leave us in a much healthier position in the league and would be more fitting based on some of our stronger performances.
